Los Angeles is served by three long distance trains and they are the Coast Starlight®, Southwest Chief® and the Sunset Limited® plus two regional routes, the Pacific Surfliner® and the San Joaquins®.
The Coast Starlight is one of the country’s most celebrated long distance trains traveling a route steeped in history and incredible scenery. It travels between Seattle and Los Angeles offering spectacular views of the Cascade mountain range in the Pacific Northwest and California’s Pacific Coast. From Chicago, visitors ride past wheat fields and ranches and through canyon passages on the Southwest Chief. The Sunset Limited from New Orleans travels across the Continental Divide on a trip that is culturally diverse. These long-distance trains feature reclining coach seats, private room accommodations, dining car and the Sightseer Lounge Car where you can take in the view through the car’s floor-to-ceiling windows.
In California, the Pacific Surfliner® offers eleven departures daily to San Diego, five from Santa Barbara and two from San Luis Obispo. From the San Joaquin Valley or Northern California, the San Joaquin route has six departures daily to Los Angeles via a motorcoach connection from Bakersfield. Both train services feature coach seating and a café car offering hot entrees, sandwiches, snacks, and beverages
Amtrak has partnered with LA INC. to promote Los Angeles as a destination and develop communications informing people about the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed Amtrak experience while traveling to LA. Additional partnership elements include e-communication and promotional opportunities through LA Getaways.
Special Offers
Amtrak offers reduced rail fares for children and seniors. Up to two kids, ages 2-15, may accompany each paid adult at half the adult rail fare purchased. Seniors 62 and over travel at 15% off the lowest available rail fare.
