4th of July Events
Fourth of July in Los Angeles is right around the corner, and all the city’s beach parties, barbecues and fireworks are just waiting to kick off. If you’re in LA, expect to celebrate America’s independence in grand style, whether you’re watching epic pyrotechnic displays or experiencing the quirky revels of Mr. and Mrs. Muscle Beach in Venice. To each his own, we say. Here are five top Los Angeles Fourth of July events to get you in the spirit of red, white and blue.

July 4th Fireworks Spectacular
Where: Hollywood Bowl
When: July 4, 7:30 p.m.
Tickets: $12–$116
Details: This Hollywood tradition certainly has some bang, and we’re not just talking fireworks. This year, all-American hero John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival is going solo and lighting up the stage at the Hollywood Bowl. Try your hand at getting tickets, pack a picnic and get ready for one of LA’s biggest fireworks shows.


83rd Annual 4th of July Celebration: Americafest 2009

Where: Rose Bowl Stadium (Pasadena)
When: July 4, 8 a.m.–9:30 p.m.
Tickets: $13
Details: The Rose Bowl has been celebrating the Fourth of July for 83 years, so you better believe that they know how to put on a good time. Live performances from marching bands across the country will get things started, while the evening culminates at 9 p.m. with a huge fireworks show.



July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza
Where: Marina del Rey, main channel
When: July 4, 9 p.m.
Tickets: Free
Details: There’s something romantic about fireworks shooting over open water, especially if they’re over the main channel of Marina del Rey. Every year, visitors gather at Burton Chace Park and Fisherman’s Village for front-row seats.




LA Coliseum 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza (with Futbol All-Stars)
Where: Los Angeles Sports Arena
When: July 4, kickoff game begins at 5 p.m., fireworks at 9 p.m.
Tickets: $25
Details: Tied into the Inaugural Futbol All-Stars Event, a new one-of-a-kind soccer invitational featuring stars from all over the world, the Coliseum’s 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza features 60 minutes of beautiful explosions. Go for the game, stay for the fireworks (or vice versa).



Annual Independence Day Celebration at Hansen Dam
Where: Hansen Dam Recreation Area (San Fernando Valley)
When: July 4, 11 a.m.–9 p.m.
Tickets: Free
Details: The celebration at Hansen Dam is the biggest Fourth of July event in the Valley. Picnics are popular, as is the 1.5-acre swimming lake, while live entertainment and food booths create a carnival-esque atmosphere until the fireworks show.



Exposition Park Fireworks Extravaganza
Where: Exposition Park
When: July 4, 8:15 p.m.
Tickets: Free
Details: One of LA’s best free fireworks show, Exposition Park’s extravaganza draws some 5,000 attendees each year. Best viewing spots: Christmas Tree Lane (north of the LA Memorial Sports Arena) and South Lawn (south of Natural History Museum).
